I’m going to quote the McNally Robinson event listing extensively here:
The Dollar Store Show
Hosted by Jonathan Messinger, author of Hiding Out (Featherproof Books)
With authors/performers Scott Snyder, Bryan Charles, and Tobias Carroll
Each month Jonathan Messinger digs through the dusty shelves of a dollar store, searching for inspiration. The treasures eventually find their way on stage as part of his monthly Dollar Store show, a reading series that has sold out for the past two years and been featured by National Public Radio, the Chicago Sun-Times and the Chicago Tribune. Messinger’s brand new novel, Hiding Out, also finds the incredible in the everyday, and he’s invited three other local authors to recreate The Dollar Store Show for a New York audience here at McNally Robinson. Scott Snyder is the author of Voodoo Heart, a collection of stories which Stephen King compares to “good American roots music: their simplicity is deceptive, their emotional power considerable. Bryan Charles’ novel Grab On To Me Tightly As If I Knew The Way is a story of coming of age in the 1990s which Thomas Beller has said “shoots into you like a bolt of electricity, sparking all kinds of excited feelings about art and life and writing. And Tobias Carroll is a Brooklyn-based writer whose work has appeared in THE2NDHAND, Paper Thin Walls, Death + Taxes, All Music Guide, and more. Join us for a unique evening of intelligent and serendipitous improv.
