At times, I felt like certain sections felt impenetrable without a working knowledge of Dylan, while others -- particularly the Heath Ledger/Charlotte Gainsbourg one -- worked perfectly fine on their own. On the one hand, his surrogates don't come off well at significant moments throughout the film, but it's next to impossible to know what someone who's not a fan of Dylan's music would take from it.
