reading on reading: blake butler on design

Over at his blog, Blake Butler has a fine post up on the cover design process for his forthcoming novel Scorch Atlas. From said post:

Zach from Featherproof and Bleached Whale Design asked me if I had an idea of what I wanted the book to look like, and I said something like one of those philosophy or science manuals from the 70′s: he took that and made it look ‘destroyed,’ as if it had suffered through itself…

The result is definitely eyecatching, and has a pretty amazing degradation aesthetic at work — I’m going to volley out a Bill Morrison reference and see if someone runs with it.
