1. Molly Templeton on Richard Swift. Because, hot damn, Swift’s “The Atlantic Ocean” is still partially stuck in my head from when I heard it three years ago, putting it up there with Zero Zero’s “Sailors Don’t Cry” and My Favorite Citizen’s “Ghost Town” in the category of songs whose studio versions I thought I might never see. Somewhere out there is a Copper Press piece I did on the man around the time of his Dressed Up for the Letdown. Smart, ebullient pop; music with which it’s hard to argue.
2. The Catbirdseat on the coming release of a Royal City retrospective. I’ll insert my obligatory praise for virtually everything Jim Guthrie’s been involved with, but also say that Aaron Riches, the group’s frontman, writes visceral, searing lyrics whose like I haven’t really heard since the group called it a day.
