Providence and the Record Labels That Call It Home

A press release received over the weekend pointed me in the direction of the new Providence-based record label Anchor Brain. My interest is definitely piqued: it looks like an artist-run label with upcoming releases from Chinese Stars and Six Finger Satellite, and this interview indicates that an experimental spirit is present. So: thumbs up so far.

The sole red flag, for me — and it’s a pretty minor one — comes in their statement of purpose.

Plans include replacing obsolete Compact Discs with limited-edition silkscreened posters that come complete with a download code for the record.

Something about the language here bugs me. Specifically, the use of the word “replacing” — given that we’re talking about a new label here, they’re not “replacing” compact discs; they’re simply not working with the format at all. Admittedly, “We’re releasing music digitally and on vinyl” doesn’t sound as immediately striking, but it’s also, you know, accurate.

(Again, a minor point — and I suspect I’ll be looking into Anchor Brain’s releases, though likely in LP, rather than poster, format.)
