Pianos on a Friday night is a strange place to be. The bar portion, which one has to traverse in order to get to the venue in the back, was on this particular night full of well-dressed, well-off types making loud conversation. The actual performance space, which had added a bar since the last time … Continue reading

On Saturday, I went along with friends to Greenpoint’s Eat Records. A friend of mine recently took over running their kitchen, and I was curious to see what the new setup was like. The last time I’d been there, the balance between cafe and record store was much more significantly in favor of the latter. … Continue reading

Union Hall is around four blocks from Gorilla Coffee in Park Slope, and on nights when my supply of coffee is low and I find myself bound for the venue in question, I’ll generally make a stop beforehand for a freshly ground pack. And so on nights when I find myself standing in Union Hall’s … Continue reading

…just a bit. Stories to come. For now, sleep.

One: Molly Templeton on this week’s Frightened Rabbit/Oxford Collapse show in Portland. In a similar vein, Pitchfork on the Collapse’s terrific “The Birthday Wars”. Two: David Edelstein on Wall-E. Interesting choice of the word “conservative” in there — I think I know what he’s referring to, but I don’t know if that would be the … Continue reading

A few weeks ago, I visited Think Coffee on Bowery for the first time. I stopped in again after work on Friday, and I’d have to say that my reaction so far has been pretty positive. While Brooklyn has no shortage of excellent places to get coffee, Manhattan at times seems to have a copious … Continue reading

And it has been since the weekend. This is where I was on Saturday: There are many more links pertaining to the show, as well as Diana Wong‘s exceptional photography, over at the ERMP site.

One: In the coming months, I will be attending many weddings. Therefore, I’m grateful for Achewood for providing a guide to etiquette there. (Potentially not safe for work.) Two: Mike McGonigal on Spiritualized’s latest. Three: Jessica Suarez on Sex and the City. (And, to spark some debate: Timothy Noah on the same, as it pertains … Continue reading

New York‘s cover story this week, essentially, focuses on the comments threads on Brownstoner to plumb the subconscious of many a recent (or not-so-recent) transplant to Brooklyn. And — I honestly wouldn’t have expected to have this reaction to an article that draws heavily from comment posts — it’s ridiculously spot-on. Read it here.

One: Rob Walker on reviving defunct brands, and the selective, not entirely reliable of the American consumer. Two: Matt Fraction on the recent activities of your favorite filmmakers. Three: Skyfarms, via Reihan Salam. My mind is blown.

For those of you in or near NYC: there’s an announcement on our first show of 2008 now up on the East River Music Project website.

Walked past this building, under construction a few blocks from where I live, the other day. In this case, I’d say some aesthetic snarkiness is very much justified.
